Version 2 · 18 October 2026
Terms and community guidelines
These are the rules for using Chatta. The next app update asks everyone to agree to this version. Until you’ve agreed to it, the version you agreed to in the app still applies.
In short
- No threats or harm. Don’t threaten anyone, and never tell anyone to hurt themselves. Obvious jokes between people can stay up. Real threats are removed. If someone’s in danger, call 000.
- Banter’s fine, bullying isn’t. Swearing and jokes are part of Aussie chat. Harassing someone, or using slurs against a person, isn’t.
- No sexual content, and respect privacy. Keep sexual content out of Chatta. Never secretly record people, and never share intimate images of anyone without their consent.
- Be real, be there. Post what’s actually happening where you are. No spam, scams or pretending to be someone else.
- Checked for safety. Public posts, Moment photos, profiles and reported private messages are checked by an automated safety check run by Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI. It can hide posts that break these rules. A person reviews removals.
- Report and block. Report anything that breaks these rules, and block anyone you don’t want to hear from. We act on reports within 24 hours.
About these terms
These terms and community guidelines apply whenever you use Chatta. Chatta is run by Josh Whitehead (“we” or “us”). By agreeing in the app, you accept them. If you don’t agree, you can’t use Chatta.
Our privacy policy explains what we collect and how we handle it.
Who can use Chatta
You need a Chatta account to use Chatta, and you must be 16 or older to have one. Each account is for one person. Chatta is made for people in Australia. Read more about why Chatta is 16+.
What’s not allowed
Swearing and banter are part of Chatta, and swearing that isn’t aimed at anyone is fine. Abuse and harm aren’t. You must not post or send anything that:
- threatens violence against anyone, or encourages anyone to harm themselves. Obvious jokes between people can stay up, but real threats are removed;
- harasses, bullies or targets a person, including for their race, ethnicity, culture, religion, sex, gender identity, sexuality or disability, or uses slurs against a person;
- promotes Nazi or other hate symbols, slogans or extremist groups, or recruits people to them;
- is sexually explicit, or sexualises or exploits anyone, especially children;
- secretly records people’s private conversations or private moments, or shares intimate images of anyone without their consent;
- shares someone else’s private information, like their address or phone number;
- is spam or a scam, or pretends to be someone else;
- is illegal, or breaks someone else’s rights, like their copyright.
Don’t try to get around Chatta’s location check, age check, bans or safety tools.
How posts are checked
- A word filter stops some phrases straight away, like threats and telling people to hurt themselves.
- An automated safety check run by Anthropic, the US company that makes the Claude AI, reads public posts (chat messages, local reports, topics, polls and events), Moment photos and video cover images with their captions, profile names, usernames, bios and photos, and private messages that someone reports.
- The check can hide a post that breaks these rules. It holds back messages that look like threats until it has checked them.
- If 3 of your posts are removed within 7 days, you can’t post for 24 hours.
- If several people report the same thing, it can be hidden while we look into it.
- A person reviews removals and can put posts back. If you think we got it wrong, email support@gochatta.com.
The privacy policy explains what Anthropic receives and how long it keeps it.
What we do about it
There’s no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. We remove content that breaks these rules and can remove the accounts that post it. We act on reports within 24 hours.
We may also hide content while we look into it, limit what an account can do, suspend an account, or remove it, without notice. Serious matters, like threats to someone’s safety or child sexual exploitation, may be reported to the police, the eSafety Commissioner or the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE).
Reporting and blocking
Press and hold a message to report it or block its author. Moments, profile photos, events and other posts have Report in their menus (the support page shows where). Reports go to Chatta, not to the person you report. Blocked people can’t see your chat messages, Moments, topics or polls, and you won’t see theirs.
For anything urgent, email safety@gochatta.com. For help, email support@gochatta.com or visit gochatta.com/support. You can also complain to the eSafety Commissioner at esafety.gov.au.
Private messages
You can only send private messages to people you’re connected with. Private messages aren’t end-to-end encrypted: Chatta can access them to keep people safe, for example when one is reported. Reported private messages are checked by the safety check and by us.
Your posts and your permission to us
You’re responsible for what you post. Posts in a chatpoint are public to people using Chatta, with your name and the place, and live posts disappear from the app after their time is up. Topics and 8-hour polls that a few people are taking part in may be listed in Trending on the map for anyone browsing the area. Trending shows the topic or question and the place, not who’s taking part.
Only post photos and videos of other people if they’re OK with it.
You keep ownership of what you post. So that Chatta can work, you give us permission to host, store, copy, process, back up and display your posts, and to share them in Chatta the way you choose, like publicly in a chatpoint or privately with a connection. This includes letting the companies that help us run Chatta handle them, like our hosting provider and the safety check, in the countries where they operate. This permission is free and not exclusive. It lasts while your posts are on Chatta, plus the time we keep copies for safety, legal reasons and backups, as the privacy policy explains. Don’t post anything you don’t have the right to share.
Location
Your live location is never shown to other people. To post, Chatta checks that you’re at the place. If you start a chatpoint, other people can see its pin, which may be near where you were standing, so don’t start one at your home. The privacy policy explains what’s kept.
Hosts
If you start or host a chatpoint, you can remove messages and ban people from it. Use those tools fairly, and only to keep the chat within these rules. We may close a chatpoint or take away host tools if they’re misused.
Your account
Keep your sign-in secure. You can delete your account at any time in Settings. That removes your account and what you’ve posted, though copies stay in our encrypted backups for up to 30 days. The privacy policy lists what else can remain.
Chatta itself
Chatta is being tested and will keep changing. Features may change or stop, and Chatta may sometimes be unavailable. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law.
Changes
We may update these terms. If the changes matter, we’ll ask you to agree again before you post.
